چکیده

India has chalked out a nuclear power program based on its domestic resource position of uranium and thorium. The first stage started with setting up the Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR) based on natural uranium and pressure tube technology. In the second phase, the fissile material base will be multiplied in Fast Breeder Reactors using the plutonium obtained from the PHWRs. Considering the large thorium reserves in India, the future nuclear power program will be based on thorium–233U fuel cycle. However, there is a need for the timely development of thorium-based technologies for the entire fuel cycle. The Advanced Heavy Water Reactor (AHWR) has been designed to fulfill this need. Understanding The Biological Effects of Thorium and Developing Efficient Strategies for Its Decorporation and Mitigation

Due to limited sources of natural uranium, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) has sought thorium (Th) as an alternative source of nuclear fuel. India has one of the largest deposits of natural Th in the form of monazite in Kerala. The currently known Indian Th reserves amount to 155,000 GWe-yr of electrical energy and can meet the energy requirements during the next century and beyond. Thorium-2...

Life-cycle impacts from novel thorium–uranium-fuelled nuclear energy systems

Electricity generated from nuclear power plants is generally associated with low emissions per kWh generated, an aspect that feeds into the wider debate surrounding nuclear power. This paper seeks to investigate how life-cycle emissions would be affected by including thorium in the nuclear fuel cycle, and in particular its inclusion in technologies that could prospectively operate open Th–U-bas...

Investigation of the required thickness of thorium spent fuel lead transport cask depending on different fuel burnups and cooling times

Thorium fuels have attracted researcher’s attention due to the reduction of uranium deposits in the world, more abundances than uranium, and the ability to be breeding in thermal and fast reactors. This study aimed to investigate the radiation safety and the amount of necessary shielding for the transportation of spent thorium fuel in the Tehran Research Reactor. The ORIGEN and MCNPX computatio...

Spent Fuel Reprocessing: an Overview

India has entered in the field of spent fuel reprocessing as early as sixties by way of R&D studies and finalising the process flow sheet. India's first spent fuel reprocessing plant was commissioned in the year 1965 at Trombay to reprocess spent fuel arising from research reactors. The recovered plutonium is being utilised to feed various programmes of the department. With the passage of time,...

Thorium Blended and Regular Mox Burn-up Studies for Fast Reactor Fuel Cycle Safeguards

Fast reactor fuel cycle (FRFC) is regaining importance because of its vital role in the long term development of nuclear power. The safety issues associated with the fast reactors are now well understood and newer designs can address those from the lessons learned in the past. The same cannot be ascertained about their safeguards issues. Primary reason being the presence of special nuclear mate...
